For those who are eating healthy, there is one food that has made its way to breakfast tables around the planet, Muesli. Originating in Switzerland over a century ago, muesli has developed from a simple breakfast cereal into an adaptable base for a full meal that is also high in protein.
Muesli is a combination of different types of rolled oats, raw nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. Unlike many of the breakfast cereals that we keep in our kitchens, muesli is generally unsweetened, contains very few processed ingredients, and very few added sugar ingredients. Muesli has a comprehensive set of natural ingredients that is purposefully balanced as complex carbohydrates, source of fiber, and healthy fats with a decent serving of protein.
Oats contain protein, but the add-ons propel muesli further. Items such as almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds are essential to adding protein to muesli. When muesli is topped with milk, yogurt, or plant-based milk alternatives, the protein level is even higher.
½ cup of muesli (approx. 45 g) provides only 6–8 g of protein,
whereas,
adding 200 ml of milk will then give you another 6–7 g of protein, and
just adding a spoonful of nuts or seeds will add another 2–4 g of protein.
On average, a simple bowl can easily reach 15-20 g of protein, so it’s a very healthy option for breakfast or post-exercise.
Fiber works with Protein to slow down digestion, keeping you feeling full longer and diminishing your chances of reaching for something unhealthy.
Essential amino acids help with the rebuilding and strengthening of muscles, which is especially good for active individuals.
A higher protein breakfast is very good for metabolism and reducing cravings later on.
The oats and seeds will promote digestion and gut health due to all of the fiber.
Use either warm or cold milk, add fresh fruits, and add some extra nuts to jazz it up even more.
Layer with Greek yogurt with berries for a protein-rich snack.
The night before, soak oats, seeds, and nuts in milk or plant milk overnight and it will be ready-to-go in the morning.
Throw a handful of muesli into a smoothie with a banana, protein powder, and milk for a filling drink.
Muesli is more than another type of cereal, it can be a nutrient-rich, protein-heavy meal with a few additions. If you are trying to achieve a fitness goal, control your weight, or just achieve a healthier lifestyle, muesli can be an easy, nutritious, and tasty way to get your body the protein it needs.
